Established in 1965, the park was once the private hunting ground of the Nawab of Junagadh. Today, it covers a vast area of 1,410 sq. km, which includes 258 sq. km of core national park and 1,151 sq. km of surrounding sanctuary. The region forms part of the Khathiar–Gir dry deciduous forests, providing a natural habitat for the rare Asiatic lion and a rich variety of other wildlife.
